Famously known for its yellow facade and views of the Atlantic, Ocean House is an iconic New England resort on the bluffs of Watch Hill, Rhode Island.
Open year-round, Ocean House’s celebrated hotel and residential accommodations, uncompromising service, beachfront location and world-class amenities pay homage to New England’s golden age of hospitality with timeless elegance and renewed civility.
Ocean House is a proud member of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux, an association that sets the gold standard for unique, high-end, independent hotels and restaurants around the world.
Over 50 years ago, the association was first conceived as a travel itinerary from Paris to the South of France with stops at charming and unique properties along the way.
This travel route was affectionately known as La Route du Bonheur – the route of happiness. Today “La Route du Bonheur” stretches well beyond the borders of France and extends to all five continents of the globe.
At the turn of the century, hotels dotted the New England coastline, inviting guests to escape the heat of the cities and spend their summers by the sea.
Ocean House opened in 1868 just after the Civil War. The hotel gained prominence among the historic New England hotels built during this era.
For those who could afford the luxury of travel, Ocean House became the quintessential summer home attracting many distinguished guests in the early 1900s.
The grand Victorian hotel was a genteel beach resort where generations of families and guests from across America came “to summer.” In fact, in 1916 Ocean House was immortalized in the silent movie American Aristocracy, starring Douglas Fairbanks.
Ocean House welcomed guests for 135 years, but as with many historic hotels, over time, neglect took its toll. The Ocean House was closed in 2003 when it was deemed beyond feasible repair. In 2004 a new structure replicating the original exterior design was conceived.
Today, this much-loved beach hotel has been recreated to convey the romance of its storied past and the rich character of Watch Hill.
The new resort features 49 rooms and 18 Signature Suites, providing more spacious accommodations than the original structure, which offered 159 rooms.
Viewed from the outside, all of the resort’s 247 windows remain in their original positions. More than 5,000 salvageable artifacts and furnishing elements were lovingly harvested from the original structure’s historic interior.
Ocean House’s 13 acres of beautiful oceanfront landscape overlook a 650-foot private white-sand beach with views of Montauk, Block Island and the Atlantic Ocean. Within the expansive grounds of the hotel, you’ll find much to enjoy.
Watch Hill residents and visitors to Rhode Island know there is no better location for enjoying the beauty and excitement of the great outdoors, and no setting more perfect to enjoy autumn’s changing of the leaves or to relax in front of a roaring fire during enchanting New England winter nights.
Naturally, the spectacular beaches provide an important backdrop, offering endless possibilities for recreation and outdoor fun during a family vacation. But the surrounding area provides a myriad of other activities, no matter what the season.
From sophisticated fine dining to casual beach fare, dining options abound at Ocean House. Fresh local ingredients, world-class service and a farm-to-table philosophy harmonize to create a culinary experience unlike any other.
A team of wine and culinary professionals welcomes guests to experience a unique selection of intimate epicurean events, tastings and immersive educational opportunities that invite active participation in the farm-to-table process.
