Visiting Boston for the first time? You’ll want to stay in the heart of city if you want to be close to famous sights like The Freedom Trail, Faneuil Hall, Boston Waterfront and North End.
For my first trip to “Beantown,” I decided on staying at Kimpton’s Onyx Hotel in the historic Westend district.
Jumping in an Uber from Boston’s Logan International Airport, it’s only a few miles to the city center via the Callahan Tunnel.
Arriving on a recent Wednesday afternoon just before Memorial Day weekend, the city was buzzing.
The Boston Celtics were playing game five in the NBA Eastern Conference finals at TD Garden that evening, which is a few minutes walk from the hotel. Harvard’s Commencement was also taking place the next day.
Walking into the front doors of the hotel, the vibe was stylish sophistication meets historic New England charm as we were greeted at the front desk.
The lobby-bar space emanates a low-key urban loft vibe including Kimpton’s custom designed PUBLIC bikes for a ride around town, which are there for all of guests to enjoy.
Adjoining the lobby is Ruby Room – not your typical sports bar or urban cocktail lounge.
The recently refreshed restaurant/bar/lounge offers a unique identity of its very own—best described as a mesmerizing gathering space that melds an upscale vibe with a sense of adventure.
Here decadent dishes pair with luxe libations, and new friends feel like old friends as you cozy up to the new leather bar or plush chairs revealing rich merlot-inspired hues.
Black granite, warm grays, curvy lines and artful lighting complete the enticing ambiance, as you sink into one of its 45 coveted seats after a day of shopping at Faneuil Hall, exploring The Freedom Trail or attending a game or concert at TD Garden.
Locals and visitors alike gather here for spirited conversation and shareable treasures like the Pulled Pork Sliders, Mini Chicken Tacos, Ruby Burger or Steak au Bleu. And because savory bites always taste better when accompanied by refreshing beverages, its expert mixologists invite you to try the famous Ruby Red Martini, concocted with grapefruit juice and muddled basil.
Ruby Room is open to hotel guests and the public for breakfast Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and weekends from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Dinner is served from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday (it’s closed on Sunday nights).
Inside Its Intimate, Boutique Rooms
Catching the elevator to our room on a high floor, the intimate boutique feel continued as we walked down the corridor.
Our Double Double Deluxe Room was cozy at 280 square feet, but the two double beds had luxurious linens and down comforters for when we were ready to recharge.
Every detail has been meticulously selected to reflect a tailored design aesthetic, featuring attractive furnishings and textures with a masculine bent.
All of its rooms feature gorgeous desks as well as whimsical accents like Sherlock Holmes wall hangings that cleverly turn book excerpts into unique pieces of art.
For couples or solo-travelers, Onyx Hotel has King Deluxe Room (280 square feet) and King Premier Room (325 square feet) offerings. All room types feature luxury Atelier Bloem amenities in the bathroom and a 46 inch HD flat screen and iHome sound system.
Kimpton also has accessible Double Double Deluxe Rooms with the options of grab bars and/or roll in shower. There’s also a King Deluxe Room for Hearing Impaired with communication features available.
After unpacking our suitcase, we returned to the lobby for the daily hosted wine hour that takes place from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. each evening for hotel guests.
Here we mingled with the friendly front-desk and bar staff who gave us tips on places to see and things to do during our trip.
All Kimpton properties across the U.S. offer the complimentary wine hour – a nice touch especially after you’ve just checked-in or are ready to unwind after a day of sightseeing.
No Excuse To Not Stay In Shape
Aside from providing free PUBLIC bikes you can take for a spin around town and yoga mats in each guest room, Onyx has a 24/7 fitness center that will keep you moving with all sorts of equipment.
There are LifeFitness treadmills, elliptical machines and stationary bike, all with TV screen. If lifting weights is more your thing, there is a full selection of free weights, ranging from 5 to 30 lbs.
Yoga mats, hula hoops and jump ropes abound along with mirrors so your form stays perfect.
Headphones, towels, magazines and a water cooler round out the fitness center in the basement of the hotel.
Indulged With In-Room Spa Services
If you are looking for ways to spoil yourself during your hotel stay, look no further than its in-room spa services.
Wellness is the name of the game in this boutique hotel that counts in-room spa services among its many luxuries. Let its experienced experts bring the Zen to your door.
